Council Calls for Katherine Centenary Logo Designs

When the railway bridge was completed on July 15, 1926, the present site of Katherine was officially gazetted. Ninety-nine years later, we are fast approaching the Katherine Centenary!

2026 will be a massive year for Katherine, with many exciting events in the pipeline. In preparation for this celebration, we invite community members to submit entries in our logo design competition.

This is a fantastic opportunity for residents to showcase their creativity and contribute to a logo concept that embodies our shared history, identity, and community spirit. We encourage everyone to submit designs, including schools, local organisations, and Indigenous groups. Let’s create a symbol that honours our past and celebrates our vibrant future!

The only design requirements are that the logo concept includes:

  1. the words Centenary of Katherine
  2. the number 100
  3. the years 1926-2026

Participants can submit their designs in digital formats (PNG or JPEG) through the KTC website webform or provide physical submissions at the Civic Centre. We encourage creativity in submissions and welcome modern, traditional, or blended designs. The objective is to celebrate, commemorate, and acknowledge Katherine's history, with particular consideration and recognition of the aboriginal custodians of the Katherine region.

Submissions are open now and close on 27 January 2025. The Council's Centenary of Katherine 2026 Advisory Committee will shortlist entries to the top ten, and then the community will choose its top three from the shortlist. All ten shortlisted entries will be displayed on flags lining the main street.

The information on this page will be updated as the timeline progresses, and there may be further opportunities for community engagement through tools used on this page. The Council invites community members to post questions about the project using the tool below. Your questions will be public, and a team member will respond to you directly. These questions may also be used to create a project FAQ.

To submit your entry, go to the Katherine Town Council website and download the form here: https://www.katherine.nt.gov.au/forms/centenary-logo-design-competition/222

Please note: if necessary, we will engage a graphic designer to develop the three shortlisted logo concepts into the appropriate format.

What’s the prize for the winning artist? Exposure?

The Katherine Centenary Advisory Committee, which predominantly comprises members of the public, developed the logo competition. The committee's project is designed to encourage broad community involvement in the celebrations, and designing the short-listed logos is a creative way to participate. The committee deliberately did not exclude any community members from submitting an entry, so they chose not to go to a graphic designer.  The short-listed logos will be recognised through local media and Council communication channels and flown on flags down the main street. So, in short, yes, the 'prize' is exposure and playing a role in the celebrations.

That's a great question! The logo will be used across all marketing and communication mediums, from printed event invitations to media releases, websites, and social media. It will be used as a graphic identifier so people can immediately recognise the content associated with the Centenary of Katherine 2026. The top ten entries (selected by the Centenary of Katherine Advisory Committee) will be displayed on flags down the main street. The most useful end-use formats will be PNG and JPG.
