What’s Happening?
The Civic Centre is an ageing building, and some areas now need major work to meet current safety and building standards and avoid more costly problems in the future. The upgrade will replace the roof, fix non-compliant building elements, and improve accessibility for people with disabilities. It will also create more practical spaces for community use and upgrade the building’s internet, phones and technology so Council can work more efficiently and livestream meetings and events.
The refurbishment includes:
Accessible bathrooms and ramps
Upgraded lighting, ventilation, and IT infrastructure
Energy efficiency improvements
Functional office and customer service spaces
The Design and Construct tender to deliver the upgraded Civic Centre was awarded to the Katherine-based construction company, Northern Building and Property Services, on 18 June 2025, valued at $4,582,811.
When will work start?
Work is well underway but the construction phase will be more visual. The public can expect to see most of the building work underway in late March, early April.
Where Can I Access Council Services?
From 8 September 2025, all Council services, including customer service and administration, will operate from:
📍 29 Crawford Street, Katherine East (former Roper Gulf Regional Council building)
Council services will remain at this location for approximately 12 months, until the Civic Centre upgrade is complete.
