Consultation has concluded
Katherine Town Council is focused on improving road safety around MacFarlane Primary School, Katherine High School, and Casuarina Street Primary School zones.
An independent body completed a Road Safety Audit in late 2023 to assess our needs and identify safety hazards and risks.
The proposed road safety improvements are important for our community, and so are locally supported solutions. We are currently engaging with the most impacted stakeholders, such as the schools, to get feedback on design options. We will also keep residents informed through letter box drops. In the documents section, you can find a copy of the audit and some suggested rectifications by Katherine Town Council. Please read through the documents and use the tool below to post any questions about the audit and suggested rectifications. Your questions will be public, and a team member will respond to you directly.
Project update 16th August 2024
The following works have been completed to make the school zones safer:
line markings and pedestrian crossings have been renewed
footpath extensions have been constructed to provide a continuous student pathways network
ramp gutters at pedestrian crossings have been constructed to allow for disability access
zebra crossing installations are in progress
electronic speeding signs have been ordered and will be installed on arrival.

Thank you. We will rectify as soon as we can.

Katherine Town Council is the local road authority in Katherine, and part of its role is to ensure road user, pedestrian, and resident safety on and around Council roads.
We will renew and create new line markings, zebra crossings at and around school crossings, and footpath extensions, providing a continuous student pathways network. We will also ramp gutters at pedestrian crossings that currently don't allow for disability access.
Where speed is recognised as a threat to road users and pedestrian safety around schools, we will consider devices used to control speed. We have shared the audit findings publicly, but these are recommendations only. Council will engage locally with stakeholders to determine which recommendations are necessary for improved access, safety and traffic flow.
